Week Eleven's Top Performers and Under Achievers

A Running Back in a Quarter Backs league.
If you recall last week's "Top Performers" article I made the point that based off fantasy scoring alone one could make the overwhelming case that the NFL is a QB's league. This Sunday the prosecution presented more evidence in the case of QB vs. everyone else as 6 out of the top 10 scorers were QBs. More notable names from Ben Roethlisberger (18/29 275 yards 3 tds plus a rushing td), Aaron Rodgers (22/31 301 yards 4 scores), and Drew Brees (29/43 382 yards and 4 tds) to the emerging Ryan Fitzpatrick (21/34 316 yards and 4 scores) who along with top performing RB Fred Jackson (21 carries for 116 yards and 2 scores), and top performing WR Steve Johnson (8 receptions for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns) made an amazing comeback against the cardiac cats in Cincinnati all but sealing another head coaching vacancy at seasons end.

Elsewhere, some guys who need to start playing like their paycheck demands, had some subpar games. In Tennessee, against a Redskins D that has let anyone and everyone score on them, the only thing Vince Young (12/16 165 yards) accomplished was getting benched in favor of rookie QB Rusty Smith. Meanwhile in Carolina, against a Panthers running defense that would let Barry Switzer rush for 100+ yards, Willis McGahee managed to rush 8 times for 23 yards and caught an amazing 2 catches for -10 yards! Furthermore in Dallas, Roy E. Williams is still continued to be haunted by the injury of Tony Romo and the new look Garrett Cowboys as he made it 5 straight weeks without a touchdown catching 2 passes for 20 yards. In the didn't know two guys who play the same position for different teams have the exact same name section of fantasy football Zack Miller of the Jaguars caught more passes and yards (3-27) as a backup to Mercedes Lewis then the Raiders starter Zack Miller (2-9).

In case you were looking for it, Brent Celek went 0-0-0 once again Sunday not receiving a single target from Vick against the Giants. That makes for an astounding 4 catches for 16 yards over the last 4 games. The FANTASY BLACK HOLE consumes another performance by Celek.

Week Eleven Starters and Bench Warmers

Favre you didn't... You did...  Wonder
if the CFL is hiring coaches?
Remember no more bye weeks which means no more excuses about having to play your second tier options. Here are your week 11 starters...

QB, Matt Cassel, KC Chiefs: do you smell a run-up? After last week's shellacking in Denver, KC Chiefs coach Todd Haley has vengeance on his mind, and who better to dish it on then a bad AZ passing d? The Cardinals give up 240 ypg and more then twice as many touchdowns as interceptions (15-7). The Cardinals have given up totals of 41-41-22-27 in their last 4 road games. Expect Cassel to connect on multiple scores with his favorite target Bowe.

RB, Mike Tolbert, SD Chargers: with injury prone Ryan Matthews out Tolbert looks to get the bulk of SD's carries Monday against the 30th ranked Denver rushing defense allowing 143 ypg. Tolbert has shown his ability to find the end-zone whether starting or backing up Matthews. After Rivers throws the Denver offense out of the game expect a steady diet of Tolbert to keep Orton off the field and the Chargers to a 5-5 record.

WR, Dwayne Bowe, KC Chiefs: see above in Cassel section.

TE, Mercedes Lewis, Jacksonville Jaguars: Monday morning may find these Jags tied for the AFC South lead as NE beats Indy, and Garrard trashes Cleveland as he has done in previous outings. Excluding last weeks game against the Jets (Sanchez just isn't looking Dustin Keller's way in the red zone any more) the Browns had given up 4 touchdowns in 3 games to opposing TE's. When near the red zone Garrard looks for his big tight end from UCLA, thus, making the recipe for a good game for Lewis against the Browns Sunday.

D-ST: because the bye weeks are done your regularly played D should be played this Sunday. Besides, their are no real breakout match ups that catch your eye. Hope you played the Bears D.

K, David Akers, Philadelphia Eagles: 3 straight weeks of double digit fantasy points should make him start-able anyways. Sunday his Eagles play a tougher defense in NY giving Akers plenty of opportunities for field goals. Plus, with Vick playing like he is Akers should get more then his chances at XP's.

Because you have a bye week don't be suckered into starting these guys:

QB, Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings: if you haven't already benched captain interception please do so now. Although his record is good at home when playing for the Vikings a stingy Packers D will limit Favre as they have done to previous opponents. GB is giving up a 10th best 212 ypg while talling up more interceptions then touchdowns given (14-9) and have a league leading 28 sacks. If this game doesn't get Chilly fired what will?

RB, Arian Foster, Houston Texans: why sit the one guy who IS THE Texans offense? Because when it comes to RBs and the Jets D at home it's never good news. Against opposing RBs the Jets have given up only 1 td and no 100 yard games.

WR, Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers: who doesn't have a touchdown since week 2? Not just Wes Welker, but Carolina's Steve Smith. Although his match up against the Ravens looks favorable be prepared to sit him until the Carolina QB situations gets sorted out. Who would have thought the loss of Matt Moore for the season would hurt the value of Smith?

TE: who else should you leave alone besides Brent Celek? How about Dustin Keller, John Carlson, or Kevin Boss?

Week Eleven Stock Up/ Down (Playoff Prep)

You might be a fool if you don't see what my trade value is.
In most standard formats the playoffs begin in a couple weeks from now so you, as a fantasy football owner, should have a firm grasp on whether you are making the playoffs or not.

If you are on the outside looking in right now here are your options:

  • You need points and who else is going to give you mondo points but a QB? You're already on the cusp of playing for nothing in a few short weeks so shake up your roster by adding a guy like Sam Bradford, Josh Freeman, or Troy Smith. What have you got to lose by shedding a fourth RB, or WR? Bye weeks are over, and you plan on using your best position players no matter the matchup? Right?
  • Make a trade! In nearly every format on nearly every website the trade deadline has not yet come giving you the option to make a trade. Perhaps due to under achieving or injury you are lacking in a position and haven't had luck pulling a guy off the waiver wire to fill in for Dallas Clark, Ryan Grant, Tony Romo, etc... Making a trade this late can be done one of two ways...
    • Find a guy who is definitely in the playoffs, and might be willing to let go of a two medium pieces (Jay Cutler, Ronnie Brown) for your blue ticket stud (Andre Johnson) to sure up his roster.
    • Find someone who is not going to make the playoffs, regardless of what transpires these last couple of weeks, and is still sending a roster every week. More then likely they will have no problem selling low on player. Especially in a keeper league if you offer them a future stud for next year so you can sure up this years roster.
  • Monitor the waiver wire. Not as in looking to pickup the next hot backup who is making a start this Sunday because, face it, this late in the season all the "hot pickups" are already claimed, and are you really going to let the future of your post season lay in the hands of an undrafted rookie from Hofstra? (P.S. due to this factor Pick Ups will relegated to twitter because the crop is nearly harvested and not worth devoting a weekly column to.)You will not make such a crazy move, yet someone else may make the move and leave a proven yet underperforming guy on the wire. A vet who may just make a difference for you in the coming weeks. Also, some guys unload rosters when they realize they are done. Proof? In a 10 team league that starts 3 QB, RB, WR, TE, D, K I nabbed Hakeem Nicks, Thomas Jones, Steelers D, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Kyle Orton.

If you are in here are some ways to ensure post season victory...
  • You have the record you have because of your kick-butt roster. Thus, unless you are lacking in a certain roster spot don't change it. Due to a bad matchup or off week one of your guys may put up a single digit and scare you into dropping him. Don't over react. He got you this far so keep him. You gotta dance with the one that brought ya.
  • Make a trade if needed. So let's say you do need help at TE, and the only ones left on the wire are no better then what you have, say Brent Celek. Scan records and find a guy who is on the fence and needs help in a position you are stacked in yet has that TE you need. Due to their hunger they may be willing to sell low on their TE and buy high on a RB like Hightower, Fred Jackson, or Green-Ellis. You're not looking to trade away a guy like McFadden or Foster, but your third option at running back may be better then their first.

Week 11 Injury Report

Quarter Backs:

  • On Monday, Ryan Fitzpatrick entered the locker room with a big wrap on his right hand, according to WGR 550. "Just got it stepped on during the game," stated Fitzpatrick. "It's actually on one of the plays they jumped offsides on, and Andy (Levitre) shoved the guy coming across and he ended up landing on me and stepping on my hand. Just some swelling, nothing too big."
  • The Detroit Lions decided that Matt Stafford (shoulder) will continue the rehab that he began last week instead of undergoing surgery after meeting with Dr. James Andrews, Chris Mortenson of ESPN.com reports.
  • David Garrard, who took a hit to his clavicle early in Sunday's win over the Texans, later underwent X-rays which showed no damage, the Florida Times-Union reports.
  • The Dolphins have placed Chad Pennington (shoulder) on IR, Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
  • Coach Tony Sparano hasn't ruled Chad Henne (left knee) out for Thursday night's game against Chicago, the Miami Herald reports.
  • Coach Brad Childress acknowledged that Brett Favre is "sore," but said that the QB has no plans to get an MRI on his shoulder and should be ready to play Sunday against Green Bay, the Associated Press reports.
  • Alex Smith (shoulder) was medically cleared to play on Monday but will return as the 49ers backup quarterback, losing his starting job to Troy Smith, CSN Bay Area reports.

Running Backs:
  • Coach Chan Gailey feels that Fred Jackson's teammate C.J. Spiller, who injured his hamstring in the Week 10 win over Detroit, is almost certain to miss a week, according to BuffaloBills.com.
  • Ryan Torain (hamstring) never got off the exercise bike as the Redskins were mauled 59-28 by the Eagles on Monday night.Wide Receivers:
  • Chad Ochocinco injured his shoulder Sunday against the Colts, but was able to finish the game, the Bengals' official site reports.
  • Josh Cribbs dislocated all of the toes on his right foot except the big toe Sunday against the Jets, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
  • When explaining why Bernard Berrian (groin) was active, but did not play Sunday, coach Brad Childress said that "Bernard slid down to me during [warmups] when I got to the field and I said, ?How's the leg.' And he said, ?Ahhh, I don't think it's good enough to go," the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.
  • Coach Brad Childress said that Percy Harvin was slated to get treatment on his left ankle Monday, Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.
  • Ramses Barden will likely miss the remainder of the season with what head coach Tom Coughlin deemed a "significant ligament injury" and a fracture in his left ankle, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports.
  • Jerricho Cotchery said that an MRI Monday revealed a 'slight' tear in his left groin, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
  • Chaz Schilens will not participate in team practice on Wednesday, Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group reports.
  • Hines Ward (concussion) says he will play against the Raiders in Week 11, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
  • Malcolm Floyd (hamstring) returned to practice Monday and was limited in his reps, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
  • Legadu Naanee (hamstring) did not practice Monday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Tight Ends:
  • Jacob Tamme, who had seven catches for 73 yards in Sunday's win over the Bengals, "could barely walk after the game," the Indianapolis Star reports.
  • Antonio Gates (foot) did not practice Monday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
  • Heath Miller (foot) is expected to return to practice on Wednesday, Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group reports.

Week 10 Top Performers, & Under Achievers

I throw 4 touchdowns and we still can't win?
If you don't believe that the NFL is a QB's league then open up your eyes and look around. 4 out of the top 5 fantasy scorers Sunday were QB's; while 8 out of the top 15 were QB's. Coincidentally those top 4 QB's came from only 2 games (KC vs. Denver & Pittsburgh vs. New England); in which all 4 combined for 14 touchdowns, and over 1,500 yards of passing.

Statistically the top QB and WR came from the KC side of the ball as Matt Cassel went 35/49 for 4 scores throwing 2 of those touchdown to Dwayne Bowe who also brought in 186 yards on 13 catches. Granted these stats are a little inflated due to Kansas City having to abandon the run in order to catch up with Denver, however, as a fantasy owner of either guys you'll take the production however it comes.

While on the ground the damage was done in Jacksonville and Buffalo as Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Jackson helped propel their teams to wins. MJD ran the ball 24 times for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns while Fred Jackson had 25 carries 133 yards and caught a pass for a touchdown as well.

Meanwhile in Pittsburgh Rob Gronkowski showed why the Patriots used such a high draft pick on him to replace Ben Watson hauling in 5 catches; 3 of them for touchdowns.

Now on to some guys who need to earn their keep...

It would be an easy write to call out Peyton Manning for only having 185 yards and no touchdowns against a bad Bengals D, but its without saying that Manning can be forgiven for having an off day. However, the combo of Vince Young and Kerry Collins combined for 143 yards and 1 score and a pick. Speaking of lowered expectations, Cedric Benson who is looking more and more like a 1 year comeback story was supposed to dominate a bad Colts running defense yet ran the ball 14 times for 24 yards. Speaking of domination, Randy Moss has had a history of great first games with a new team, yet only caught one ball for 26 yards narrowly beating out Brandon Marshall's 3 catches for 34 yards as the worst performance by a top tier WR in Miami.

Week 10 Starters and Bench Warmers

Looking for Brent Celek? You'll find him in a black
hole of fantasy irrelevance.
Stop! Collaborate and look at your roster. If you have anyone from Oakland, Green Bay, San Diego, or New Orleans promptly get them out of your starting lineup; that is unless you enjoy zero points coming from Aaron Rodgers or Philip Rivers.

QB, David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars: If you subtract his performance against the Titans, in which he was concussed out, Garrard has thrown 9 touchdowns in his last 3 games (13 for the season) while only throwing 2 interceptions. Coming off a bye week the Jaguars play against the worst (32nd) passing defense in the league that let Philip Rivers throw for 4 touchdowns to a TE not named Antonio Gates and a guy known as "tutu". Beyond Garrard having great fantasy numbers this game should show whether the Jags are rising and the Texans are falling.

RB, Brandon Jacobs, NY Giants: despite not rushing for a touchdown for the first time in 5 games Jacobs did carry the ball 11 times for 78 yards. Dallas is giving up 128 ypg on the ground, and is poised to give up a red zone score as they have done against opposing RB's all year. As usual Bradshaw should end up with more yards, but Jacobs will get a touch or two in the red zone making him starter friendly.

WR, DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles: Besides the woeful Texans who else is giving up nearly 300 ypg to opposing WR's? Vick looked good last week and so did his #1 target Jackson for 109 yards and 1 touchdown on 7 catches. Washington is allowing nearly 20 ppg at home, and averaging less then 2 sacks per game which should give Vick all the time he needs to find Jackson.

TE, Brandon Pettigrew, Detroit Lions: if Stafford was playing I would be all over this like conservative on Fox News, but considering the Lions run game stinks, Shaun Hill will throw until he can throw no more, and the matchup against a Bills d that has given up 8 touchdowns in 6 weeks to opposing TE's I like Pettigrew to have a decent game for a Lions team looking for their first road win in their last 25 attempts vs. a Bills team looking for their first win all season.

D-ST, Philadelphia Eagles: this game has revenge sprinkled all over it like parmesan on spaghetti (are you tired of the alliterations yet?). The Eagles D was humiliated by McNabb and company when Donovan made his return to Philly. Donovan gave the Eagles D plenty of bulletin board material by saying post game the Eagles made a mistake trading him, plus who knows if or when he'll get pulled for Rex the Hex. Even if Donovan plays the whole game don't look for an offensive exposion as he yet to throw more then 1 touchdown in a game all season, and has more interceptions on the season then touchdowns (8-7).

Guys who may not look so good Sunday...

QB, Jon Kitna, Dallas Cowboys: how do you neutralize Kitna's effectiveness?

  1. make it impossible for him to find Dez Bryant. 3 of Kitna's 4 touchdowns have gone through Bryant, and when you remove him from the field like Jacksonville did Kitna is nearly useless.
  2. score on consecutive drives against the Cowboys D forcing Kitna to make plays. The Cowboys have been unable to stop anyone lately, and it has caused Kitna to turnover the ball 8 times, yeah 8 times, in the last 2 weeks.
Kitna managed two touchdowns in week 7 against the Giants, however, both of them came in garbage time. With Romo still hurt Garrett may be forced to throw the untested Steven McGee into the game against the Giants.

RB, Ronnie Brown, Miami Dolphins: so Brown has his 2nd touchdown in 8 games and you are thinking of starting him? Don't be so quick. Though the Titans are giving up just over 100+ ypg on the ground they have only yielded 3 touchdowns all season. Combine the fact that Chad Pennington will play this Sunday (making Brandon Marshall owners hopeful) and at home Brown has peaked to no more then 11 carries/ 54 yards in a game your expectations for Ronnie having a great game should be tapered.

WR, Chad Ochocinco, Cincinnati Bengals: ode, thy name is garbage time. If you take away two garbage games against New England and Atlanta #85 has no touchdowns and is averaging 3 rpg/ 34 ypg. When Palmer is looking for a WR he is finding Terrell Owens who has 7 scores in his last 5 games. Indianapolis isn't a team looking to give up trash time touchdowns besides this Bengals/ Colts matchup looks more favorable for Cedric Benson then the Batman and Robin combo.

TE, Brent Celek, Philadelphia Eagles: he will continue to remain in the fantasy black hole of doom, and unstartable until he does something productive. As in more then a 0 for 0 for 0 performance last week against Indy.

Week Ten Stock Up/Down

Jon Kitna = fantasy gold for Dez Bryant owners
The backup Qb position has been a problem for the Cowboys the past few years as Tony Romo has been replaced by the stellar work of Brad Johnson and more recently Jon Kitna. The play at QB is affecting more then just the Cowboys record, and more recently Wade Phillip's employment status. It is also hampering two of Dallas best WR's in Miles Austin and Roy Williams.

Before Romo's week 7 injury at the hands of the Giants Austin and Williams had combined for 4 100+ yard games and 7 touchdowns. Since Kitna has been at the helm Austin and Williams have combined for 1 100+ yard game and 0 touchdowns. Williams who was finally having a breakout season has been limited to 2 catches for 27 yards over this 3 game stretch making him almost fantasy irrelevant. The firing of Phillips and promotion of Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett to Head Coach improves the stock of Austin and Williams, however, until Romo is back the poor fantasy numbers for Miles and Williams should continue.

On the other hand, one gleam of light has emerged from this dumpster fire of a situation and he is first round selection Dez Bryant. Whether it's in the red zone or in garbage time Kitna has been looking for Bryant to the tune of 224 yards and 3 touchdowns tripling his touchdown performance and out gaining his yardage compared to the previous 5 weeks combined! Furthermore, Kitna has been looking his way more and more each week as his receptions and yards have been increasing.

If you're going to play a Dallas WR Bryant looks like your only safe pick until Garrett or Kitna changes something.

Week Ten Pickups

T
With Portis and Torain possibly out Williams may be your dude
Quarterback's:

Josh Freeman, TB Buccaneers: In case you haven't noticed the 2nd year player from Kansas St. is quietly becoming a solid QB giving you at least 1 touchdown and 180+ yards of offense per game. Still unowned in nearly half of all standard leagues means he's available for you this Sunday if you're regular is on bye. What more then the word "Carolina" do you need to hear to pick him up?

Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams: as a Mizzou fan it pains me to recommend him, but when he has thrown at least 2 scores in 1/2 of his games he is definitely worth considering. He has no interceptions in 3 straight games, and plays a weak SF defense this weekend.

Runningback's:

Keiland Williams, Washington Redskins: with Ryan Torain ailing from a hurt hamstring and Clinton Portis questionable to return Sunday Williams should be in everyone's view. 2 weeks ago he was given a few carries/ passes which resulted in a touchdown. If neither Torain or Portis can go this Sunday Williams will get a lions share of the offense.

Mike Goodson, Carolina Panthers: with three backs down Goodson is the only healthy back left for the Panthers. Although the situation doesn't look good with no one else currently on the roster to relieve him, and defenses don't have to respect the Panthers play-action because of the rookie caroussel with Clausen and Pike; Goodson may be the only "available" pickup on your waiver wire. In no way am I saying he is Michael Turner, but if Turner could burn TB for nearly a 100 yards and 2 scores Goodson should have good results as well.

Wide Receiver's:

Davone Bess, Miami Dolphins: although he isn't getting much yardage what he is getting is targets which makes him a prime pickup if in a ppr league. Catches of 8-5-6-7-5 over the last 5 weeks make him a great PPR performer.

While you may be tempted to pick up Seyi Ajirotutu hinder your desires. The SD Chargers are on bye and Ajirotutu will fall in the depth chart with Floyd, Naanee, and Jackson all return.

Tight End's:

Brandon Pettigrew, Detroit Lions: when Megatron is covered up like he was this past Sunday Pettigrew becomes a nice red zone target for whoever is throwing for the Lions.

Jacob Tamme, Indianapolis Colts: filling in for the injured Dallas Clark, Tamme has caught 17 passes for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns. He is a definite starter in all leagues now.

Week Nine Trends and Topics

Defensive genius? Not so much any more...

  • Since the week 6 do or die matchup against the Vikings the Cowboys defense has all but died giving up totals of 41, 35, and 45 to the Giants, Jaguars, and Packers. Opposing QB's have scored 12 touchdowns in this 3 week span, and things look no better against pass happy Eli Manning at New York and Matthew Stafford at home.
  • Speaking of defenses, the Patriots D has given up 5 rushing touchdowns over the past two weeks while only allowing one score through the air.
  • After what we saw yesterday in Oakland; week 17's Oakland vs. KC game at Arrowhead could very well be for the division title. However, don't rule out San Diego who has rolled off 3 straight wins. By the way, don't look now but by week 12 Rivers will have Vincent Jackson to throw to again.
  • Every one's hot pick up was LeGarrette Blount, however, the lesser known Javarris James ran for 2 touchdowns Sunday against the Eagles while Blount only touched the ball 13 times for 46 yards.
  • Everyone remembers Carolina drafting Jimmy Clausen to be their QB of the future, but in the later rounds they took Cincinnati standout Tony Pike. While he only went 6/12 for 47 yards; his getting into the game to replace Clausen may signal that Carolina may not be sold on the QB from Notre Dame just yet.
  • The Charlie Whitehurst era is not off to a smooth start in Seattle with a 12 completion, 113 yards, and 1 touchdown performance against the Giants Sunday giving up their first home loss.
  • Finally, Patriots WR Wes Welker had just as many kicking points as 5 kickers yesterday as he nailed an extra point in relief for the injured Steven Gostkowski.

Week Nine Top Performers and Under Achievers

Week Nine thus far was the week of the RB as 3 out of the top 5 fantasy scorer's were RB's. If this were the NBA Peyton Hillis would be making strong considerations for comeback player of the year as he continues to make Josh McDaniel look stupid for trading him to Cleveland for a 3rd string QB in Brady Quinn. Meanwhile in Houston Arian Foster took on the bulk of the Texans offense in a losing effort to the surging Chargers, and Adrian Peterson worked to help keep Brad Childress employed for another week in Minnesota.

Here are your week nine top scorers:

  • Against the Patriots Hillis rushed 29 times for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns.
  • Arian Foster had a combined 197 yards and 3 touchdowns, nearly 4, against the Chargers.
  • Adrian Peterson had 81 yards on the ground, and 63 through the air with 2 touchdowns against AZ.
  • The Cowboys and Jon Kitna kept up their losing ways by giving the Packers defense 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and scoring only one touchdown (a pass from Kitna to Dez Bryant) on them in a lopsided defeat.
  • As I tweeted last night; you could give Philip Rivers a couple of homeless guys and he would find them in the end zone. Rivers threw for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns; 2 a piece to a backup Te (Randy McMichael and Seyi Ajirotuto)
On the flip side here are some guys who underperformed you into a possibly loss yesterday:
  • Matt Schaub was mediocre again yesterday as he threw for 267 yards and 1 score plus an interception. And you spent a 4th round pick on him?
  • How do you follow up a 117 yard/ 2 touchdown performance against the Vikings? You run 9 times for 14 yards marking the first time in 6 weeks he didn't find the end zone.
  • One trade that McDaniels may have gotten right was the Brandon Marshall trade. Or maybe it's just that Chad Henne is an interception waiting to happen. Marshall hauled in 5 receptions for 30 yards. Save the Sunday night game against the Jets Marshall has no touchdowns for the season.
  • He's owned in over 80% of standard leagues, was probably started in most due to a 6 team bye week, and yielded his owners a 0 receptions for 0 yards performance equalling 0 points combined over the last two weeks. And you still own him why?
Check back for later for Week 9 trends and topics...

Week Nine NFL Picks and Spread Picks

  • TB Buccaneers over Atlanta Falcons (TB +8.5)
  • Buffalo Bills over Chicago Bears (Bills +2.5)

Week Nine Stock Up/Down

Trouble? Me? Huh?
The biggest question this week isn't why the 0-7 Buffalo Bills claimed Shawn Merriman off the waiver wire; although it does baffle me. Perhaps nothing makes more sense then a winless team going after a top DE to sure up their d-line.

It is, however, what went on in the mind of Brad Childress to release a future hall of fame WR just 4 weeks after the Vikings traded a 3rd round pick to NE for him? The joke of all jokes would have been the Patriots picking him back up so ESPN could run the line, "NE Patriots trade Randy Moss for a 3rd round pick and Randy Moss."

Regardless of insubordination, being a cancer in the locker room, possibly being the cause of Brett getting his chin lacerated, or Brad needing to show that he is the Man in Minnesota; Moss is gone and is now a Tennessee Titan.

Think about that from a reputation standpoint. The Titans were #24 in line for Moss meaning 23 other teams passed on Randy. That alone should be enough for him to pull his head out of his ego, and start shaping up. However, as long as he relies on the fact he is tall and fairly fast he'll expect that big contract during the offseason.

Moving on, what fantasy impact does Moss's departure from Minnesota and arrival in Tennessee mean for the Vikings and Titans receiving cores?

For Minnesota it means stock down on Percy Harvin and stock up on Visanthe Shiancoe. At the beginning of the season, with the injury of Sidney Rice, Harvin was viewed as the Vikings #1 receiving option and got the bulk of attention from opposing defenses. This was seen in the Vikings first game as Harvin was targeted 5 times, yet only caught one ball for 12 yards. Meanwhile Shiancoe was the leading receiver with 4 receptions, 7 targets, for 76 yards and 1 score. This pattern continued next week as Shiancoe had more receptions/ yards then Harvin. However, in week 5 when Moss arrived roles were reversed and Harvin lost the double coverages he normally saw because of the presence of Randy. In his next 3 out of 4 games Harvin would have no fewer then 5 receptions/ 60 yards including a 2 touchdown performance at New York, and over 100 yards this past Sunday at New England. Meanwhile during those same 4 games Shiancoe would average 2 receptions per game and a measly 24 ypg.

With Moss leaving Minnesota we can only assume that things in Minnesota will return to pre-Moss conditions and allow Shiancoe to be Favre's #1 target as Harvin gets double teamed again. So... what does this do to things in Tennessee?

Kenny Britt: undoubtedly the #1 target of both Collins and Young; Britt is the go to guy. His week 10 status and beyond is gloomy due to his hamstring issue. Even when he returns it may take a while for his hamstring to get acclimated to game speed. Right now he is not a factor to worry about.

Nate Washington: while Britt was in the doghouse at the beginning of the season he was the deep threat for the Titans and looked ready to reassume that role after the injury of Britt. If things hold true for the Tennessee offense one WR gets all the attention from the QB and everyone else gets the breadcrumbs. Chris Johnson is such a heavy part of the offense it only leaves so much left for wide receivers. As Moss learns the playbook look for him to get the bulk of targets while Washington fades back into the fantasy black hole.

Bo Scaife: already a non factor in the offense Scaife averages just under 3 rpg, 22 ypg, and only 2 scores on the season. The small amount of looks he received should diminish as he becomes more of a pass blocking tight end in order to give more time to Collins/ Young to find Moss.

Week Nine Pickups

Picking up LeGarrette Blount is way too easy of a call this week
The short and quick recommendation would be to pickup after LeGarrette Blount after breaking out a 120 yard, 2 touchdowns on 22 carries performance, but where's the tough fantasy analysis in that? After all, every one else in your league most likely put in a waiver claim after him. Thus, you need to go elsewhere.

Remember, we're in week nine, thus your waiver options are going to be limited unless something catastrophic happens. I.e.: a line of injuries promotes a guy from the practice squad to starting lineup.

RB, Keiland Williams, Washington Redskins: a line of injuries may be just what he needs to get the amount of carries/ catches to become fantasy relevant. With Clinton Portis out and still recovering, and Ryan Torain possibly out with a hamstring promotes Keiland Williams as the starting RB. Though you can't use him this weekend because he's on bye; you should keep an eye out for him as injury reports come out of D.C.

RB, BenJarvus Green-Ellis: what else must this guy do to be owned in more then 50% of leagues? 5 straight weeks with a touchdown capped off by 2 touchdown, 122 yards on 17 carries performance should be more then enough umphh to get him off the wire and into your starting lineup.

RB, Javarris James, Indianapolis Colts: when every other RB is hurt on your team it opens up the way for you to start. The week 10 status of Addai, Brown, and Hart for next weekend all look suspicious. RB plays a very essential part of the Colts offense, and James should be used in some manner Sunday against Philadelphia simply because they have no other options!

WR, Randy Moss, FA: this is just a hunch, but sometimes ffball owners have been known to over react to news and may have dropped Moss once they heard he was waived. Though his value may be low; he would be an amazingly great pickup if you could find.

WR, Nate Washington, Tennessee Titans: before the injury of Britt Sunday Washington was fantasy crap, however, he is now their #1 deep threat and showed that with a season high tying 4 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. He's off this week, but worth watching if Britt isn't ready to go in week 10.

WR, Steve Breaston, AZ Cardinals: if he can stay healthy he helps increase the value of Larry Fitzgerald, and has a nice tendency to rack up yardage. In his 2 truly healthy games, limited by a knee issue, he has 15 receptions for 279 yards. If, and its a big if, Derek Anderson plays Sunday against Minnesota Breaston has nice value in yardage, and ppr leagues. Don't worry about touchdowns though; when you rack up 130+ yards when your knee cooperates with the rest of your body touchdowns should follow.

TE, Jacob Tamme, Indianapolis Colts: stick a TE in this offense, and Manning will find a way to throw the ball his way. 6 receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown figures to make him a nice fill in when other TE's are under performing or hurt.

K, Dan Carpenter, Miami Dolphins: Kickers are worth taking a look at; especially when they end up being the highest scorer on their team. In 4 of his last 5 games he has made at least 3 field goals and an extra point. In the last 2 weeks he has made 5 field goals in each game, and figures to be a key part of the offense against a rested Baltimore defense.

What Week 8 Taught Us

Fantasy scoring wise; week 8 was a strange weekend with no one really having a "breakout" game from notable names save for Calvin Johnson (9 catches, 101 yards, 3 scores). However, some other players had broke out performances that weren't expected of them:

  • QB, David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars: 17/21 for 260 yards and 5 touchdowns
  • QB, Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions: 26/45 fpr 212 yards and 4 scores
  • RB, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, NE Patriots: 17 carries for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns
  • RB, LaGarrette Blount, TB Buccaneers: 22 carries for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns
  • WR, Brandon Tate, NE Patriots: 3 catches for 101 yards and 1 touchdown
  • WR, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Oakland Raiders: 5 receptions for 105 yards and 1 touchdown
Here's a few other things we learned Sunday in week 8...

Jon Kitna was not the smartest pickup of the week. After throwing for 2 touchdowns in relief of Tony Romo last week against NY, Kitna was expected to throw all over a terrible Jacksonville pass defense. Yet, Kitna threw for 4 interceptions with 1 touchdown coming in garbage time. Don't forget, Kitna's 2 scores last week came in garbage time as well. Another QB picked up in several leagues was Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. After 4 weeks of 2+ touchdowns in each game, 11 touchdowns in all, Fitzpatrick threw for only 1 touchdown after being projected for 300+ yards and 3 touchdowns against the 25th ranked passing defense. I wonder in how many leagues both Garrard and Stafford were left unclaimed.

If you own Thomas Jones or Jamaal Charles it's always a good idea to start either of them. It's even better if you have both! Despite not running or receiving for a touchdown Charles tallied up 238 total yards with a 22 carry/ 177 yard performance adding 61 yards in the air. His counterpart Jones added 19 carries for 77 yards compiling 41 carries for 254 yards yesterday.

Mercedes Lewis is poison. It's just a matter of whether your or your enemy ingests it first. Lewis had just 2 receptions yesterday, however, both of them were scores marking the second time this season he has turned in a performance where all his receptions were touchdown catches. For the season he has 4 games with a touchdown, and 4 games without a touchdown reception. Garrard is looking Lewis direction when near the end-zone, it's just a matter of if the Jaguars offense can give Garrard the opportunity to be near the goal line.

Out of the 28 TE's that played yesterday only 6 of them scored.

Tarvaris Jackson has scored as many touchdowns in less then 2 minutes of work then Brett Favre has in nearly 2 games worth of work (1).

Since being drafted by the Ravens in 2007 Troy Smith has a record of 3-0, and had more touchdowns (2) then 19 other QB's who played yesterday.

In two weeks the Raiders have scored 92 points; Sebastian Janikowski meanwhile has converted 5 field goals and 11 extra points.

Since having no interceptions in weeks 1-5 Mark Sanchez has thrown 4 picks in 2 weeks time.

Week Eight Starters and Bench Warmers

Reminder: if you have anyone from Atlanta, Philadelphia, the NY Giants, Baltimore, Chicago, or Cleveland to give them a first class ticket to the bench for this week. Since week 8 brings us 6 teams on a bye it handicaps your bench by a good 18%; thus forcing you to use players you may have normally just left in reserve land. Now while it may seem a tad scary, get it Halloween, to use these players or to bench them trust DCS that this is no trick. It's all treat.

QB, Mark Sanchez, NY Jets: after the way he and his Jets played in week 1 it's hard to believe the Jets are tied for the best record in the league. While the Jets boast a defense that is in the top 3 of all important categories Mark Sanchez has been doing his part by playing like the franchise QB they drafted him to be. After game 1 when the Jets took the training wheels off Sanchez he has had 3 straight games of at least 2 touchdowns (8 in all) with no interceptions. In his last two games he has dealt with torrential rain (Minnesota) and a defense that had "run all over me" written on it (Denver). However, the Jets did win those 2 games even with Mark's measly numbers. For the season Sanchez has 9 scores to just 2 interceptions (both thrown in the Denver game). At New Meadowlands Stadium Sanchez faces the 21st ranked passing defense in GB. While GB's defense has more interceptions then touchdowns given (10-8), they are giving up 214 ypg. Corner back Charles Woodson is questionable for the game which could leave one of Sanchez's targets open all day giving him and you points when your regular starting QB (Matt Ryan, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco) is out this week.

QB, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills: see week 8 pick up of the week.

RB, Thomas Jones/ Jamaal Charles, KC Chiefs: regardless of what Coach Todd Haley says not just one of these guys is the clear-cut starter. Depending on the week both Charles and Thomas have shredded opposing defenses, and both were used in tandem to pick apart the Jaguars last week as they ran 35 times for 196 yards and 2 scores. These numbers could have been higher, but the Chiefs D made Matt Cassel throw catch with Dwayne Bowe to catch up with Jaguars offense during the first half. Once again at Arrowhead the Chiefs play a putrid run defense in Buffalo who gives up 174 ypg. The Chiefs passing defense hasn't been too good themselves so look for Haley to limit Fitzpatrick, possibly, by keeping the ball and the clock in the Chiefs backfield.

WR, Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts: who has revenge on his mind after being embarrassed at Houston? Who is playing the 30th ranked passing defense in Houston? Who has one healthy option at WR this Sunday?  Yes, Peyton Manning. Who is his one healthy option at WR? Yes, Reggie Wayne. Nuff' said.

WR, Steve Johnson, Lee Evans, Buffalo Bills: collectively they have 9 of Fitzpatrick's 11 touchdowns. KC is ranked 25th against the pass. The Bills rushing game stinks. Sounds like every reason to start one of the two.

TE, Tony Moeaki, KC Chiefs: if ever a must start ever existed for a tight end this is it. Against opposing TE's Buffalo has 3 straight games of giving up 2 scores. While yardage and receptions have been somewhat low; what has been given up is passes near the red zone resulting in touchdowns. With Cassel checking down every opportunity he gets; finding Moeaki should be no problem.

D-ST, SF 49ers: even though they have 7 interceptions for the year and they play a QB who has to throw just to keep his team in the game I don't like this play for one reason. LONDON. In England they will be playing on a soccer field that plays much faster then a football field, and in the past this has caused offenses and defenses to not play at their full potential. Besides; they let Matt Moore and a rookie WR, David Getts, play catch on them to the tune of 8 receptions, 125 yards, and 2 scores last week. Until their defensive play is more consistent the 49ers D can't be trusted.

Even though these guys are available to play just keep them on the bench"

QB, Drew Brees, NO Saints: bench Drew! Huh? Drew has been inconsistent as of late, and Cleveland seemed to be just what the doctor ordered to get him off of his free-fall. However, he turned the ball over 5 times while managing 2 scores thanks to garbage time. At home he plays against a Pittsburgh defense that has more then twice the number of interceptions then touchdowns given up (9-4). Pittsburgh has given up no more then 1 score and 281 yards to opposing QB's, and the trend will continue as Pittsburgh dominates both sides of the ball.

RB, Ronnie Brown/ Ricky Williams, Miami Dolphins: with the ineffectiveness of the wildcat offense, the offseason acquisition of Brandon Marshall, and the emergence of Davone Bess the Dolphins run game has steadily been declining while the passing game has been on the increase. For the season the Dolphins running game has only 1 score, coming in week 1 against the Bills, while Chad Henne has thrown for 8 touchdowns. This week the Dolphins play against the Bengals who were tore apart by Matt Ryan and Roddy White. Look for Henne and Marshall to do the same, and for the Williams/ Brown combo to ground out short yardage at best despite what Michael Turner did to the Bengals last week.

WR, Randy Moss, Minnesota Vikings: I was almost tempted to tell DCS readers to bench Moss because of the uncertainty of the QB position, but this game has revenge written all over it. When Moss has revenge on his mind he puts up yards and scores. Moss has held a lifelong grudge against Dallas for passing him up, and has made them pay ever since the 98' draft. Since being shipped out for a 4th round pick Moss should have revenge on his mind, and will find a way to score on NE. Wait. I am gonna tell you to bench him! Favre's ankle may not let him finish the game Sunday. If he can't finish the game Tarvaris Jackson will come in relief, and Jackson will look to run down the field if his first option isn't open.

TE, Jeremy Shockey, NO Saints: vs. TE's the Steelers D has only one game in which they given up a touchdown and more then 49 yards. Meanwhile in Shockey's last two games he has 4 receptions for 51 yards combined with no scores. Look more of the same this Sunday as another TE plays terribly.
